Male Benigoi – Yagenji Koi Farm

Benigoi ('red koi') is a solid red koi, ideally deep and uniform from nose to tail.

Origin and history

It is judged in Kawarimono, the 'unusual' class of non-metallic koi that do not belong to any of the other groups.

Color and pattern

An even, deep red over the body and fins. Even red, with no orange or faded areas, is hard to achieve and highly valued. Benigoi is closely related to the Chagoi family and often shares its friendly temperament. It can grow large. The red ranges from orange-red to a deep crimson, and the deepest, most even reds are highly valued. Fins are often red, though some fish show white fin tips.

In your collection

Kawarimono add variety and personality to a pond. Many of the solid-colored types (Chagoi, Soragoi, Karashigoi, Kigoi, Benigoi) are calm, people-friendly fish that grow large and help settle a group of more nervous koi. Because their colors are simple, judges look closely at body shape, skin and even color.
