If you choose to heat your pond we recommend that you have a redundant system. In other words, have a back up heater on hand in case of mechanical failure of your heater. When a pond does not have artificial heat the koi are allowed to gradually adapt to the increasingly colder water. On the other hand, if your heater goes out when ambient temperatures are frigid, the water cools too quickly for the koi to adapt.
